Combining Synchronous and Asynchronous Elearning Tools in Distance Education – Experiences from a Course for Developing Countries
نویسنده
چکیده
Distance learning requires a specific effort of addressing the students: Students motivation has to be kept up high throughout the course via interesting and diversified teaching material and methods. Experiences from distance courses held in asynchronous teaching mode showed that this is difficult over a longer period. Adding live online interaction using a virtual classroom system for synchronous teaching generated positive effects in terms of student’s motivation and engagement. An already established eight weeks distance course using Blackboard learning system has been brushed up with live online interaction using Elluminate Live!, a real-time virtual classroom that allows live interactions. Scheduled at strategic moments throughout the course, these live sessions help to cover important topics in detail and to keep the motivation of the students high throughout the course. The share of drop outs during the course was considerably decreased compared to previous courses. Technical problems related to synchronous approach with developing countries in terms of limited internet access or low bandwidth could be alleviated by modifying the pedagogical approach implemented.

متن کاملUsing a wiki to facilitate learning on a Requirements Engineering course
In this paper, we describe the introduction of a wiki for collaborative activities in a Requirements Engineering course offered at a distance to parttime learners. The paper describes the course and how wiki activities were incorporated. The paper then discusses the initial feedback from the students which shows that the wiki has been largely effective for developing students’ understanding of ...

This paper reports on the authors’ experiences in designing and teaching synchronous distance learning classes in electrical and computer engineering and in designing asynchronous distance learning classes for a graduate program in information technology. These experiences provide insight into the characteristics, benefits, and limitations of these two modes of distance learning. These characte...
متن کاملWork in progress - Enhancement of distance learning through hybrid e-learning approach
The usefulness of hybrid delivery in education has long been realized. With the advancement of computer and communication technologies and the introduction of Web-based authoring tools, its effectiveness has been further extended. In this regard, it has affected traditional distance-learning by transforming it from a static videotape delivery to a more dynamic format by adding/substituting the ...
متن کاملDistance Synchronous Information Systems Course Delivery
Teaching computer information systems via distance education is a challenge for both student and faculty. Much research work has been performed on methods of teaching via distance education. Today we are faced with a variety of options for course delivery. Asynchronous delivery via online or lesson instruction still remains most common. But alternative synchronous delivery methods such as Adobe...
